From wednesday to friday I was in Pray near pittsville, tearing down an old shack that a guy my wife knows purchased last fall on Koslowski Rd. I knew there was wolves in the area but not as many as i heard and found about from Bev at Saddlemoind tap. Wed. night I slept in my tent ( not very well though) even w/ my .357 under my pillow I felt like a free meal to any pack. Thurs. night I started a fire and was burning some of the old shack materials I tore down, and all of sudden not more 100 yds away I here em howl! Now remember I live in Baraboo near the Dells and we have no wolves to speak of. Once in awhile someone claims they've seen one but I have not. That howl put me on high alert! Not to mention during the day I noticed a carcass of yearling doe no more than 40 yds from the work site, and then about 45-60 min later there it stood staring at me like I was giant piece of beef on 2 legs! This is no joke folks. Then out of the darkness another! At this point I am freaked out, even w/ my .357 holstered on my hip and my hand on it. I had a empty mt. dew bottle w/ the top cut off for a cup that used to put gas in to start the fire, I had refilled it in case the fire didn't take off and it was sittn on the cooler next to me, so I tossed it in the fire and the flame shooting up lit the area well enough to see 2 more in the woods behind the first 1 I saw. So that's 4 wolves looking for a meal near my site, the brightness from the flame jumping scared them off long enough for me to get my sleeping bag and stuff out of the tent and into my truck.
I sat in the truck for nearly two hrs watching for there return, I didn't see them return but i have a hunch they were there again! I slept in the truck!! This is the stupidest thing the DNR has ever done by far. Does anyone know under what circumstances you can actually shoot them? Do they have to be within a certain distance from you? Do they have to be charging or growling at you? Or just if you feel you're being hunted by them? I would've shot at them but knowing the DNR and the animal rights activists I probably would've been put in jail and fined heavily!
